Unraveling a Tesla secret

While waiting for the car delivery, I accidentally found the TEsla BOM site.
Great stuff in there, as one can literally view every bolts and nuts of the car, and Part numbers, ...etc.

https://epc.tesla.com/#/login

A quick login with your tesla account, :

And there it is, for example a nice view of the entertaining system and its numerous speakers.

How cool is that :-)

On its way

:)The waiting time had been both frustrating and irritating at the same time, but all that will disappear when I'll pick the car up and meet the new love of my life!

The Jasper Arrow is now moving again towards Europe, full of M3P :-)

For those who are currently waiting a Performance Model 3

Two days ago, my Tesla advisor confirmed I was assigned a VIN, and my car is a Cargo Carrier that departed from San Francisco packed with performance cars, the "Jasper arrow".

But one of the ships carrying cars to Europe, the Jasper Arrow, has stopped in Kingston Jamaica...

Indeed, we can see the cargo stopped in Jamaica since 3 days,  with "VT Explorer" ..
it is making circles in the port...

Real pricetag of my diesel SUV

I used to own a Range Rover Evoque Diesel ( I know..) and it was fun to drive, cool looking too.
Now I will soon get a Model 3, and wanted to share with you some basic costs differences of the cars side by side.

In the following table I calculated the cost of the energy used to drive 35000km per year, as well as the associated service costs ( i am not displaying items like tires, that are exactly the same):

Bottom line :  in six years, you save about 25000 CHF if you own an EV vs an ICE car.

if you look at it from a different angle: take the purchase price of the car, and add these energy and service costs. How does it adds up ? it is a no brainer !

VIN decoded

You tracked the ship carrying your Tesla with "VT explorer" as explained in a previous article, now you know it has reached your country.
--> For Europe deliveries that will be "Zeebrugge" Belgium port.

Now what ?
Now if your lucky you have a VIN assigned (vehicle identificaiton number), meaning one fo the car on this ship was assigned to you.

Where do I find the VIN?
Either you wait to get your Tesla advisor on the phone, or look at the source code of your Tesla account ( under the "manage" section).
--> right click and hit"view source code"

What does this VIN tells you ?
Decoding it with the offical USA NHTSA  tool will tell you all about your car config :
I also provide as a bonus the latest official coding provided by Tesla to NHTSA :

so, some info to play with while waiting for the final delivery that is gettng very close now that you have a VIN :-)

Audi and Porsche are disappointed

I link bellow a great article in French describing in detail what Audi and Porsche have done to a Tesla Model 3  : bought it, disassembled it, and finally found out their new 2020 Platform is...more expensive than the Model 3 one !

Battery, facts and Myths

This is one of the main reason Tesla leads its market segment : batteries.

Not only they choose the most energy-dense cell available, but they improved it and developed the battery pack to fits its vehicles reaching above 610 Kms of range for their higher end versions.

Tesla uses NCA chemistry (and to my knowledge is the only EV manufacturer to do so).
This stands for Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium (LiNiCoAlO2) which is the lightest and most enduring combination, so far. Built by Panasonic, todays top end batteries are fitted in Tesla Model 3 and the same pack will power homes, and future Tesla models.

A few numbers now to bust the Myth :

  • A Model 3 pack is made of 21700 cells, and totals :
  • 80% of Nickel, 15% of Cobalt and 5 % Aluminum. Lithium ? As per Elon Musk quote : " it is like salt on salad", almost nothing.

  • 100% of this Nickel is reusable at the end of the battery lifetime.
  • Nickel as well as other materials can be sourced without mining: There are solutions, known for decades, like "farming", "phytomining"... You can "grow" Nickel using plants like "Alyssum murale" capable of producing naturally 100Kg of Nickel / ha  ( or per 2,5 acre) :

Same is true for Cobalt, it can be taken out of plants.
Sources :
http://www.nancy.inra.fr/Toutes-les-actualites/Des-plantes-pour-l-extraction-des-metaux
https://patents.google.com/patent/US6786948B1/en

The energy density has improved from model S and is now about 160 Wh/kg in the Model 3, at cell level, and Tesla goal in terms of cost is to reach less than $100/kWh.

Last interesting info :  Tesla now claim to have a battery that can last a million miles :

Tesla on the sea...

So where is your Tesla ?

You have ordered one, (ideally using my referral link https://ts.la/emmanuel31121 ),
and now you wonder when you will get it delivered?

A Tesla fan made a great Googlesheet to follow each single boat that carries our
cars to Europe and Asia, and more : http://bit.ly/TeslaCarriers
You can see which boat gets for example to Zeebrugge port ( where all Teslas are carried to for Europe mainland).

To see where is the ship with your car on its last days of travel, the best site I found is an app:
VT explorer. They provide you with a free trial (for 3 days)  and allow you to get the ship location
with only a couple hours of delay.

Enjoy.

great news about the Tesla shop !

You all know this site :  https://shop.tesla.com/  as the best place to get Tesla goodies, sunshades, mates, tire repair kit, shirts, caps ... you name it.

Yes but...most of the items on this site are NOT available outside the USA.
Well, that maybe over.

I was chatting today with a Tesla representative in Europe ( about the long delivery...60 days so far, waiting for my tesla), and in the discussion she told me that most of the items found in the Tesla US shop will be available as early as November  2019 in Europe!

I'll keep you posted.

A few words on the ordering process, Tesla wise

To place your order, go directly to Tesla web site (https://www.tesla.com) or click on a referral link (like mine https://ts.la/emmanuel31121) to get some free supercharging.

  1. But first of all you have to make up your mind between the wonderfull SEXY models Tesla has to offer : a high end S or X, a model 3 or you can even reserve a Y as of now.
  2. Then comes either the choice to get your car from the existing inventory, or do a custom order to select your battery size, your exterior and interior color; autopilot.
  3. The "place order" button : next big step is financing : leasing, loan, .. ?  Really up to your wallet and objectives ( how many years you plan to the car....), all have pro and cons.
  4. At this stage you need in all cases to make a small downpayment.

  5. Now you should have received an email from deliveryCH@tesla.com saying that your order is confirmed, and that you need to login to your tesla account to continue.
  6. Next steps : upload some documents like ID, proof of living at the specified adress, delivery adress...you will see.
  7. Then you get an email from tesla asking to select a day and time for a short phone call (10 min) within the next 3 days.
This is just a basic discussion to verify te previous steps have been completed, and you made the downpayment, and uploaded the required documents.

  8.  Now you wait for a delivery date, normally provided by email , maybe phone call from the Tesla rep. You will have to make the final payment 7 days prior to it.
    so in summary :

Why ordering an electric vehicle ?

Save the planet ! Or at least make a step in the right direction.
What an excellent reason to order a Tesla or any other electric powered vehicle.

Why? Are these really clean, what about producing the batteries, is this contributing to the global warming?
Lets start this article with a couple facts I gathered to compare ICE ( internal combustin Engine) cars versus EV ones:

CO2 emmited during the entire lifecycle of a vehicle ( to produce it and then use it during 150000Km)
        ICE :  46 tons
        EV :   26 tons
        (Source http://presse.ademe.fr/2017/12/etude-le-vehicule-electrique-dans-la-transition-ecologique-en-france.html)

NOx emitted when driving these cars for 150000km
        ICE : 75 tons
        EV :  0 tons
        (Source http://acti-ve.org/emissions-nox-voitures-diesel-euro-6-camions-euro-6/pollution/2017/01/ )

But lets not forget the energy consummed to drive 150000Km, it does also emit CO2!
How does the production of this energy (extraction refining, transport.;.etc) contribute to the pollution ?

    Diesel
        6 tons of CO2
        (Source  http://www.bilans-ges.ademe.fr/documentation/UPLOAD_DOC_FR/index.htm?new_liquides.htm)

    Electricity
        0,42 tons of CO2
        (Source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Switzerland)

So as you can see, this is a no brainer. EVs are far less nocive for the environment than ICE.
