BMS and why you should set display to %

So I own a Model 3 P , a year of ownership,  25000 kms done.

Like everyone at the begining i was worrying on max range displayed, and how it was going down.

So I decided to gather data overtime to sort it out a little, and it seems that there could be a huge difference in max SOC displayed due to outside temperature, battery temperature.  current SOC... and so on.

I think it might help new owners, and convince them to switch to % :-)

About the data : sometimes the max SOC is 500 km, so  311 miles , and can be seen on my car as low as 231 miles too... We can see clearly that around 25°C ( 77°F ) , range is displayed around 310 miles or so, so as advertised by Tesla.

But when temp goes down, Range displayed goes down, and this is not degradation.

Screen shot last week, car in my Garage at 25°C :  max SOC displayed  311 miles :

But now check this out: today it reads only 231 miles !!

After yesterday night ( car slept in the street ) I started charging after lunch at 10 Amps , temp  32° F :  Max SOC : 231 miles  and you can see the blue line showing battery is freezed.

Same day, after 45 minutes charging at 10 Amps ( at work)  : Max SOC : 261 miles
    Battery is warming up

Next is also BMS calibration.
I have the habit when i reach 10% SOC to let it sit a few hours like that, and then only charge it up to 90%. It helps BMS to calibrate and have a better max range display.

Hope this helped you, current owners of M3.

Cleaner Cars from Cradle to Grave

Found an article on Forbes from 2015 already stating at that time  that as long as people are buying and driving cars, Teslas are excellent choices regarding carbon emissions.

The article refers to a detail study comparing for example an average midsize midrange BEV with an average midsize gasoline-powered car :   it takes just 4,900 miles of driving to “pay back” !!

A very good summary is provided with this chart  :

Lets talk about numbers:

1- manufacturing of a full-sized Tesla Model S rear-wheel drive car with an 85 KWH battery was equivalent to a full-sized internal combustion car except for the battery, which added 15% or one metric ton of CO2 emissions to the total manufacturing.

2-before anyone says "But electricity is generated from coal!", they took that into account too --> it's included in the 53% overall reduction.

3-what happens to the battery at end of lifecycle?  Answer: Tesla recycles it, recovering 70% of the carbon, as Umicore’s factory plants are able to recycle their batteries into completely reusable materials and substantially reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing Lithium-ion batteries.

New 82 kWh battery pack in Model 3

As per Electrek our source, Tesla confirmed new 2021 Model 3 vehicles are now equipped with a new 82 kWh battery pack ( more energy-dense battery cells produced by Panasonic).

--> Panasonic said it increases the energy density of cells by 5% ,output by 10%.

These new cells are still 2170 battery cells and not the new 4680 cells developed by Tesla.

and unveiled at Battery Day in September. Although, they could benefit from some chemistry improvements developed by Tesla for its new cell format.

New Model 3 Long Range Dual Motors AWD is getting a new record range of 353 miles on a single charge.

Future Tesla buyiers guide

Looking for reasons to buy an EV ?

  1. You get some free supercharging if you place your order  using a referral code ( here is mine if you want  https://www.tesla.com/referral/emmanuel31121   )
  2. You save the planet as EVs emit far less CO2 van ICE
  3. You save money on gas ( using free supercharge as per 1., and because electricity is cheap)
  4. You save on maintenance, as EVs are virtually maintenance free.
  5. EVs last longer than ICE, no engine, rock solid battery.

Now lets get into details:

  1. Using a refferal code like mine https://www.tesla.com/referral/emmanuel31121, will provide you with 1500 km of free supercharger use.
  2. EVs emit fat less CO2 van ICE : numbers.

    •  CO2 emmited in the entire lifecycle of a vehicle ( produce & use it during 150000Km)    ICE :  46 tons   /   EV :   26 tons   Source
    •  NOx emitted when driving these cars for 150000km                                                               ICE : 75 tons    /   EV :  0 tons       Source
    •  Energy consumed to drive 150000Km (production ,extraction refining, transport.) :     Diesel : 6 tons of CO2   Source  /  Electricity   0,42 tons of CO2   Source

     3. Savings on gas :here is cost of the energy used to drive 35000km per year, as well as                               the associated service costs ( i am not displaying items like tires, that are  exactly the same):

Bottom line :  in six years, I save  25000 CHF owning an EV vs an ICE car (range rover evoque).

     4. Maintenance : as my Tesla rep said: “ no  maintenance at all, just come back in six years for AC”..

     5. EV last longer that ICE : for those worrying about battery life, as per this informative chart I                   gathered from youtuber Like Tesla,  even with the worst charging habits, ( 100-20% ) it takes                  300000 miles to see a 10 % capacity loss. Quite good actually.
